Research Securotracks used by Thales for the MOD Urban Grand Challenge:
In 2006, the Ministry of Defence launched a competition, the
MOD Grand Challenge (see www.challenge.mod.uk), for teams to devise the means to carry out
reconnaissance missions using semi or fully autonomous remote vehicles.
The finale is now in progress at Copehill Down training village on Salisbury
Plain.
In March 2008, Thales (http://www.thalesgroup.com/uk) ordered two Securotracks for their Unmanned Ground Vehicle platforms, which we delivered
at the end of May. Thales fitted these with an autonomous control
system and sensor package in conjunction with a team of third year
MSc Cybernetics students from Reading University, to form the Unmanned
Ground Vehicle portion of Thales's entry for the Grand Challenge.
On August 13th, the T3 Team, comprising Thales (Leadership/Comms/Integration),
Carvec (Helicopters), Ryland Research (Ground Vehicles), Reading University
(Autonomous systems), Bristol University (Video threat detection) and
STEMNET, succeeded in completing the qualifying round and are now finalists
in the competition. |
